Sera Banks clambered up the rungs on the side of the Chamber, a six-foot diameter aluminum-coated sphere resembling an enormous fishbowl. Dropping into its hollow core, she crammed herself and the bulky parcel on her back next to the petite frame of her mentor, once renowned physicist Dr. Iggy Mikos. She grasped the handle on the hatch and creaked it closed, enveloping them in darkness. “He’s coming. Punch it!”
Iggy stabbed at backlit buttons on each end of the Converter, a twelve-inch-long barbell-like device with a handhold in the middle. Her finger slipped. Patience. Feeding on Sera’s impetuousness could get them both killed. She steeled herself and counted off the memorized sequence. “Here we go!” They strapped on oxygen masks, and she entered the final keystroke.
A blinding flash of light and a deafening roar consumed the Chamber. The two scientists shrieked in agony before passing out.

Captain Drew Sutherland sliced his access card through the magnetic reader to unlock the door and rushed into the lab, mouth agape. He circled inside the customary shabbiness of the blistered ocher walls, observing cracked lab benches cluttered with wires, circuits, and tools. Equipment hummed, while a familiar ionized smell permeated the air. All the apparatus for the project were present, but the researchers were absent. His decreasing spirals propelled him to the obvious destination, the shiny orb dead center of the warped linoleum floor. Cupping his palm on the convex surface, Sutherland flinched. The alloy blazed with heat. He stepped up on the ladder and heaved the hatch open with a massive forearm. The empty brass interior gleamed back at him in the fluorescent glare. He rubbed the back of his military buzz cut. Where could they be?
6:01 pm – EDT
Hurtling through the sky two miles west of the lab at thirty thousand feet, Iggy woke with a start, the Converter lashed to her left hand. Freezing wind roared in her face, numbing her as she gasped into the mask. Of all the luck—displacement must have triggered a blackout. Struggling to orient herself with respect to gravity, she waited the requisite number of seconds and then pulled the ripcord. The parachute billowed out. Snap! She felt the sensation of being jerked upward by an unseen entity.

READER REVIEW: "Rachelle Ayala has a gift for writing touching stories. In this novel the themes of rape and abortion are treated in a unconventional way. The decision of keeping a baby of a rape is a tough one and the author uses the form of the novel to talk about it. I suggest this book not only to women but to men too!" --Steve74it

About the Author
Early on S. J. learned that in the world of fiction an underdog can win. One of his first favorite reads was a novel called THE KID WHO BATTED 1.000, a tale about a last-to-first-place baseball team. Plenty corny, but he still thinks it’s better than the movie ANGELS IN THE OUTFIELD. The clincher for his writing career might have been when he discovered alliteration, though he couldn’t have defined or even pronounced the word. In first grade he wrote a little tale entitled, ahem, “On Porpoise on Purpose.” He doesn't remember the details, except that his young male hero, riding the back of a big fish, performed some bold deed of great import. And no, Flipper wasn’t on TV yet. From there, he gathered enough literary acumen that his eighth grade teacher told him he had an ear for dialogue, and then somehow he won the county spelling bee, and then what seems like a few days ago he grew up, though his dear wife, son, and daughter might question that last assertion. Some honest-to-goodness authors told him he could write a bit, so he submitted a few short pieces of fiction, some of which were published. Then he picked his own underdog and wrote a novel about an amateur woman golfing against the guys, and he called it THE VICTORS CLUB. Anyone can find out what S. J. is up to by checking out his website at sjcrown.com

Slaves hate me, my mother wants me executed, and my only chance of survival rests in the hands of a young man, Ryder Arteres, whose sister I sentenced to death. What people are saying about Escapement:

About the Author
Crazy in Paradise, is my debut novel, a Florida Keys mystery, a "laugh out loud, roller coaster ride."
I've been writing, in one way or another for as long as I can remember; poetry, sappy short stories and a romance novel. I wanted to create a book that would make the reader laugh, cry and cheer... and then run out and tell their friends about it. My love of reading began early in life when I'd run home with my Scholastic Book order form and debate my options. My first favorite author Betty MacDonald of Mrs. Piggle Wiggle fame. I live with my family and rescue cats in South Florida.

About the Author
Biography Jack of all trades and stereotypical black sheep, Cara has been writing somewhat dark and morbid since that teen angst hit somewhere in the early 90's- probably because her dad was a mortician. After pursuing a degree in English, she changed gears to photography and design in 2006... although she kept penning stories for fun while reading the works of Edgar Allen Poe, Oscar Wilde and Hemingway (whom she adores even though he was a huge douche canoe). In 2009, her life shifted considerably and she found herself writing Elegantly Wasted- helping her sort out a bunch of stupid feelings and other lame stuff.
She enjoys cynical debates, cupcakes, making her mother-in-law sew her aprons that she never wears, zombies, the Fifth Element and Tomb Raider. She gathers her life inspirations from Neil Gaiman, Julia Child and Paul Simon. When she isn't out photographing her next project, she's studying color, concept and design or writing stuff down in hopes it makes sense one day... or she's on Pinterest.
Cara lives in Las Vegas with her husband, John and their three genetically altered dogs all of which have personal vendettas for the guy who cleans the pool.
