1. Go to the library.
Take your children to the library as often as you can. There is a great selection of books there, and kids can even pick out movies and video games. Allow your children to choose which books they want to read so they can figure out what they like and what they don't like.
2. Incorporate books into your daily routine.
Keeps books in your home. Make sure they are handy. Even if you read in short spurts, you are still benefiting your children.
3. Embrace all forms of reading.
Does your child enjoy reading magazines? That's great! They don't have to peruse the classics in order to benefit from reading. Allow them to choose things that interest them.
4. Pick topics your kids like.
Choose books that tap into an interest that your child has. Even things like comic books are fine; just make sure they are reading!
5. Pose questions.
As you go through the story, ask your child about the action. For example, you could say, "Does this picture tell you anything about what is happening in the story?"
Find a place where you and your child can cuddle up and read together. The bed or the couch are ideal places. Also, set up a little reading nook for your child, so that they can read by themselves.
7. Encourage reading.
Keep a book for your children in the car or in your bag. If they have a moment where they are waiting around, like at a restaurant, encourage them to read. Did you know it may even boost children’s intelligence?
8. Pick up old favorites over and over.
If your child has a favorite book, encourage them to read it more than once. This will help improve their self-esteem, because they will feel confident in their reading ability.
9. Rhyming is great!
Books that rhyme or repeat phrases are wonderful for children. They can take part in reading the story!
10. Read before bed.
Read your children a story before bed each night. It is a wonderful way to help them wind down, and it is something that you can all do together.
