My fantastic book was hot off the press and soon to be seen in stores and homes across the land, or so I thought. When I wrote My Mother My Child, I had all the confidence in the world it would be a best seller. My publisher would now get it into the public's hands. Wrong!
I learned all too quickly, the publisher's job was basically finished when I received my finished product. He would list it in bookstores and do little else as far as promotion.
As I realized marketing the book was to be my lot, I became aware of three glaring truths. I trust these will be helpful to you.
1. No one will appreciate your book as much as you. You have poured your heart and soul onto each page. For you it's a one-of-a-kind book that every reader should possess; much more than another product on a shelf.
2. Local sales are limited. Every friend and relative will not purchase a copy. Well-meaning friends will share their book instead of encouraging others to buy one for themselves. You need to learn how to move beyond your circle of influence for sales.
3. No matter how well done, an ad in the newspaper will yield little or no sales and can be quite expensive. Exploring online options is a must in today's world. You must learn to use Facebook, Twitter, and other online venues to your advantage.
If you are overwhelmed as I with marketing your book, don't lose heart. There are helps available. Spend time reading marketing articles on the internet. Many offer free tips and guidelines for effective marketing. The key is to not spend too many hours searching and reading. Schedule a period of time each day on marketing. Choose one good tip to follow before reading more.
