A Family Saga Filled with Love Triangles, Sea Turtles, and an Oil Spill
When environmental writer Caroline Carlisle sets off to report on endangered sea turtles during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the last thing she expects is to uncover secrets - secrets that threaten to destroy her family, unless she can heal the hurts from a lifetime of lies. To make matters worse, Caroline's love for her late sister's husband, Simon, creates an uproar in a southern family already set on a collision course with its past.
Using real-life events as the backdrop, Trails in the Sand explores the fight to restore balance and peace, in nature and in a family, as both spiral toward disaster. Through it all, the ancient sea turtle serves a reminder that life moves forward despite the best efforts to destroy it.

P.C. Zick has created an intriguing novel based on the BP oil spill and a southern family with a dark and dysfunctional past. While weaving a tale of a family in crisis, the author also gives its reader a look into the disastrous impact the oil spill had on the environment, wildlife and people in the Gulf Coast region of the U.S. It's clear that the author did a lot of research into the accident that not only impacted the environment, but also ended the lives of the men working on the rig that exploded in the Gulf.
In addition, the author did a good job of opening up the lives of a very complex family to the reader. The painful past leads a trail to the complicated future where lives are still impacted by the actions of those long ago. Family ties are strong, even when they are unhealthy.
Overall, this story of a strong dysfunctional family with a secret past in the mist of one of the worst environmental disasters in US history will please many readers of different genres. Worthtaking the time to read.
